----- English fables --------------------------------------------------
FABLE 4: The monkey as king
There is a great competition amongst the animals to be named King of the Beasts. Each animal gets a chance to explain why they should be King. Fox says that he should be King because he is clever, but his speech is boring. Monkey is chosen, because he dances around and makes funny faces. Fox does not like it that the silly Monkey has been chosen as King ahead of him, so plays a trick. He takes Monkey into the forest, saying that he wants to show him a present fit for a king. Fox shows Monkey beautiful, ripe banana on the forest floor, and when Monkey runs to pick it up, he falls into a trap. Fox can help Monkey escape from the trap, but will only do so if the Monkey agrees not to be King. The other animals agree that the King of Beasts should be clever enough not to fall into traps. |

FABLE 5: The bundle of stick

She shows them the error of their ways by asking each one in turn to snap a bundle of sticks in two. It is too difficult for any of them to snap the whole bundle, but when she unties the bundle and gives them one stick each to snap, it is easy. The sons realise the value of working together, and by doing so, win the top prize in a building competition |

FABLE 40: The boy who cried wolf
A boy has the job of protecting a flock of sheep from wolves. If a wolf comes, he is to ring a bell and cry out “wolf”, so that the men from the village will come with their guns. After a few days with no wolf, the boy is getting bored, so he pretends that a wolf is attacking. The men come running, and praise the boy even when they find no wolf, believing his story of the wolf having run off. The boy enjoys the attention, so repeats the trick. This time he is not praised – the men do not believe that there was a wolf. When a wolf really does attack, and the boy rings his bell and cries “wolf”, the men do not come, thinking that he is playing the trick again. The wolf takes one of the fattest sheep. |

----- Our own fable -------------------------------------------------
Once upon a time, there was a group of cows standing in their pasture. Enjoying the grass in the sunshine. Birgitte the cow looked up and saw another meadow at the other side, being greener and full of delicious grass. That's what she wanted! She slowly walked towards the other meadow, until she saw that there was a brook separating the two pastures. Without thinking about it, she tried to jump across the small river, but she failed and landed in the brook. She was all wet and dirty, but could not come out of the river. Her feet were stuck in the mud and when she tried to free herself, she only got stuck more. When she realized she wouldn't manage to get out on her own, she started to moo. Of course, the other cows heard that and one, named Bob, came to her. However, instead of helping Birgitte out of the brook, Bob tried to pass the brook himself, so he would be the one on the other side eating the delicious grass. But, Bob failed as well. He wasn't even able to jump further than Birgitte and got stuck as well. Together they started to moo as loud as possible and all the other cows in the pasture came to them. Instead of jumping all in the brook separated the cows thought. Then they walked in a group the brook in. Slowly, but constantly moving. With the whole group they tried to push Bob and Birgitte forward. It all went really sure, but they made sure they didn't stop, because if they would stop, they would be stuck. And in this way they all got to the other side of the brook. So, they didn't reach the other meadow by just going alone, but because of the face they worked together they reached the other pasture. And no doubt, Birgitte was right, the grass here was greener and more delicious.
